How Solar Works

Light from the sun hits your roof and the photons in the light interact with the electrons in the solar panels.  This generates electricity in DC form.  A combiner box collects the energy from all the panels and feeds it in to an inverter.  The inverter converts the electricity from DC to AC.  Your appliances and devices can only run on AC, or Alternating Current.  Any excess electricity not used by the applicances is fed in to the grid.  Utility companies are required to give you a credit for the energy you produce but don't use.  These are called 'net-metering' laws and they  help reduce the size of your bill.
